Improved road conditions benefit farmers

KIULU: More than 1,400 farmers in Kiulu are set to gain better access to 6,680 acres of agricultural land as efforts to improve farm roads and strengthen the agriculture sector progress, said Kiulu assemblyman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai.
He emphasised that improved road access is crucial for ensuring that farmers can fully utilise their land and enhance productivity.
“As we work on improving connectivity, I also want to encourage more villagers to open up their land for farming as a sustainable source of income,” he stated during the closing ceremony of the Vermicompost and Durian Grafting Introduction Course held here on Friday.
The course, organised by the State Rural Development Ministry in collaboration with the Kiulu Sub-District Office, attracted over 30 participants, including young people.
Joniston noted that infrastructure alone is not enough; therefore, agricultural-related courses will be intensified to equip farmers with the necessary knowledge and skills.
“This will be achieved with the support and cooperation of relevant departments and agencies to ensure proper training and guidance,” he added.
He also mentioned that discussions aimed at strengthening agricultural development in Kiulu have already taken place with the Tuaran District Agriculture Office and the Rural Development Ministry.
While Kiulu has established itself in rural tourism, Joniston stated that greater emphasis is now being placed on expanding agricultural opportunities, including high-value crops.
“We are also exploring vanilla plantations as a potential source of income, and recently, my service centre facilitated a visit for over 20 farmers to a successful vanilla farm in Kimanis,” he said.
As part of ongoing efforts to support the farming community, 47 agricultural roads have been identified for upgrades and construction this year, with RM1.5 million allocated from his constituency fund for these improvements.
Joniston concluded that enhanced infrastructure and training would support farmers and create opportunities for agri-tourism, positioning Kiulu as a model for rural economic development.
