KePKAS Supports Darau Wetland Fireflies and Mangrove Rehabilitation Project

KOTA KINABALU: Kelip-Kelip (Fireflies) and Mangrove Rehabilitation at Darau Wetland, has the support of the Ministry of Tourism Culture and Environment (KePKAS) underscoring the Ministry’s commitment to promoting community-based tourism and environmental conservation.


KePKAS has contributed RM31,000 to support the implementation of Project said it's Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Christina Liew.


Officiating the launch of the project, Liew congratulated the Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu Pearl (RCKK Pearl) for initiating the programme in Kg Darau, which is located close to Kota Kinabalu City Centre.

She said the project represents a new tourism product to be managed and operated by the local community, aimed at enhancing socio-economic well-being while safeguarding the ecosystem and biodiversity.


“The Ministry is pleased to support this meaningful initiative that not only protects the environment but also creates opportunities for the community to benefit directly from ecotourism development,” she said.


Liew expressed confidence that Darau Wetland has the potential to become one of the State’s must-visit destinations.

She noted that attractions such as river cruises, sunset views, firefly sightings and other nature-based products could be further developed to attract both domestic and international visitors.


She also encouraged the involvement of international Rotary Clubs partnering in the project to help promote Darau Wetland to their respective networks abroad.


“My Ministry will continue to provide support to ensure the sustainability of this initiative and the growth of Darau Wetland as a significant tourism attraction,” she stressed.


The Minister subsequently officiated the launch of Project Kelip-Kelip and Mangrove Rehabilitation at Darau Wetland.


Also present during the event were Past President Chendramata Sinteh and

Datuk Eliza Goh as well as Datin Dr Jeanette Tambakau the new President, among others.
