KUALA LUMPUR: After losing his majority, words got out that Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin will be stepping down soon.
According to a report by the MalaysiaKini news portal, a minister in the Prime Minister's Office disclosed that Muhyiddin will submit his resignation to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah on Monday.
The minister said party members have been informed of Muhyiddin's decision to end his 17-month premiership and that a special cabinet meeting will be held tomorrow.
If the resignation is confirmed, it would be up to the King to decide what happens next.
On Friday, Muhyiddin has on a televised address proposed a cross-party framework for bipartisan cooperation that will be implemented by the government following the passing of the vote of confidence.
He said there will be a more stable and inclusive government that recognises bipartisan input in managing the pandemic after the confidence vote is done.
However, the Opposition coalitions have rejected his offer to work together.
