KOTA KINABALU: In celebration of Malaysia’s 68th National Day, the Miss Universe Malaysia Organisation (MUMO), in collaboration with Persatuan Pentas Anak Seni Malaysia (PPASM), has announced the winner of the Malaysia Top National Costume Designer 2025 Competition. The winning creation will be worn by Miss Universe Malaysia 2025 at the 74th Miss Universe pageant in Thailand later this year.
The competition, held yesterday at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), was attended by the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Ts Mustapha Sakmud who was represented by his Private Secretary, Rafe’e Jafree, and Chief Executive Officer of the Sabah Tourism Board, Julinus Jeffery Jimit.
The winning design, by Mell Sulaiman, captivated the judges with its bold storytelling and meticulous craftsmanship. Drawing inspiration from the vast blue seas and the splendour of traditional arts, the costume pays tribute to the Bajau Sama heritage.
Shimmering blue-green hues symbolise the clarity of the ocean, while striking red, yellow and black ethnic motifs reflect courage, resilience and ancestral legacy. A golden crown-like headpiece, reminiscent of the serimpak, embodies the grace and dignity of Bajau Sama women.
The ensemble is further enriched with beads, gold-toned embellishments and the iconic Duang Bajau prop, capturing the vibrancy and richness of Bajau culture. Its intricate detailing highlights the designer’s artistry and dedication to presenting Malaysia on the world stage. The National Costume round is one of the most anticipated segments of the Miss Universe pageant, where elaborate designs from around the globe are showcased.
The judging panel included MUMO’s National Director, Charissa Chong, and Miss Universe Malaysia 2024, Sandra Lim.
“This is the first time MUMO has taken part in a national costume design competition, giving Malaysians the opportunity to contribute their talent to the world stage. The winning designer will work closely with us to prepare the National Costume for Miss Universe Malaysia 2025 at the 74th Miss Universe pageant in Thailand,” said Chong.
The event also served as a celebration of Malaysia’s 68th National Day, with cultural performances, design showcases and interactive community activities.
“This is more than just a competition, it is about telling Malaysia’s story to the world. Tonight, we celebrated the cultures that shape our country, showing how diversity creates a harmony unlike any other. Through each performance and design, we reimagined Malaysia’s journey with creativity and pride,” said PPASM Chairman Jawed Khan.
The Malaysia Top National Costume Designer 2025 Competition stands as a testament to the nation’s commitment to nurturing creativity while embracing its cultural richness. From Sabah to the Miss Universe stage in Thailand, the winning design will carry Malaysia’s story with boldness, innovation and pride before a global audience.
The Miss Universe Malaysia 2025 gala night will take place on 12 September at The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Autograph Collection, where the nation’s next representative to Miss Universe will be crowned.
