KENINGAU: Repeated flooding is wreaking havoc on homes in Kampung Sandapak, where residents are appealing to the authorities to urgently construct a culvert to prevent further damage.
For years, local resident James Kumpit Unggati has raised the issue, but despite multiple applications, no permanent solution has been provided. In the meantime, he has resorted to makeshift measures, using old car tyres as improvised culverts to divert floodwaters.
“Water has entered my house countless times, destroying furniture and electrical appliances. It happened again just yesterday. If nothing is done, I fear the damage will only get worse,” he said.

While residents are grateful for improvement works carried out on the Tampadawon River behind their homes, James stressed that the absence of a proper culvert leaves them vulnerable whenever heavy rain falls.
“This culvert is not just for me, but for the safety of all my neighbours who suffer each time there is flooding. We urgently need action,” he pleaded.
The situation in Sandapak highlights the vulnerability of rural communities, where inadequate infrastructure can turn seasonal rains into recurring disasters. For villagers here, the construction of a single culvert could mean the difference between constant hardship and long-term security.
