KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Environmental Protection Association (SEPA) has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment (KePKAS) to eradicate the persistent odour at Kota Kinabalu Central Market, utilising Effective Microorganisms (EM) Technology from Japan over a three-month period.
SEPA President Alexander Yee stated that this presents an excellent opportunity to collaborate with the Ministry in efforts to enhance hygiene and cleanliness standards within the market.
The initiative follows a courtesy call to Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew in April this year, during which SEPA expressed its intention to renew its partnership with KePKAS for mutual benefit.

"We were encouraged by the Minister to adopt a proactive role in maintaining cleanliness in the state capital, especially in anticipation of Visit Malaysia Year 2026. Subsequently, I led a team of SEPA EXCO members to visit several sites, including KK Central Market, to assess potential solutions," Yee told reporters at Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal.

"This area experiences a high concentration of tourists, making it vital to keep the location clean and presentable."
