SINGAPORE: The latest accommodation search data from digital travel platform Agoda reveals Thailand and Malaysia as the most preferred visa-free international destinations among Indian travellers. Indonesia continues to dominate as the top destination for visa-on-arrival (VOA) entries. The data indicates a growing interest compared to last year in destinations across Asia that offer straightforward entry requirements alongside diverse leisure and cultural experiences.
Agoda analysed accommodation searches made in India for visa-free and VOA destinations, between 1 and 18 January 2026, with check-in dates ranging from February to March 2026.
Among the top five destinations searched with visa-free or VOA status, Thailand ranked first, followed by Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. Thailand (visa free) and Indonesia (VOA) remain firm favourites, offering a rich mix of beaches, culture, and adventure, while Malaysia (visa free) combines urban attractions with natural splendours.
Sri Lanka (VOA) experienced a notable 61% increase in accommodation searches compared to last year, supported by its proximity and diverse offerings. The Maldives (visa free) continues to attract Indian travellers seeking luxury island escapes and short-haul premium stays. These destinations exemplify Indian travellers’ preference for locations that provide excellent value and easy access.
Beyond the top five, the Philippines (visa free) ranked sixth, with a remarkable 73% year-on-year growth in searches, driven by beach lovers and adventure seekers, with water sports remaining a key attraction. Nepal (visa free) ranked seventh, while Kazakhstan (visa free) was eighth, drawing interest for its distinctive Central Asian landscapes. Bhutan (visa free) secured ninth place, appealing to those interested in wellness and cultural immersion.
Laos (VOA) ranked tenth, recording the strongest growth among all top destinations with a 97% increase in searches, positioning itself as a culturally rich alternative within Southeast Asia, supported by simplified visa procedures and rising awareness among Indian travellers.
Commenting on these trends, Gaurav Malik, Country Director for the Indian Subcontinent & Indian Ocean Islands at Agoda, said, “Indian travellers are becoming increasingly deliberate in their travel choices, with visa accessibility playing a crucial role. Agoda’s 2026 Travel Outlook Report also revealed that if visa restrictions were not an obstacle, 84% of Indians would travel more frequently. Additionally, 91% expressed openness to exploring new destinations—more than their Asian counterparts. The rising interest in emerging locations like Laos and the Philippines, alongside established favourites, reflects a growing desire for diverse, culturally immersive, and hassle-free travel experiences.”
