SANDAKAN: The Sabah First programme organised by the United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO) continued to draw strong support, with over a thousand residents from the Gum-Gum area attending the gathering at Dewan Gum-Gum Batu 16, Sandakan, yesterday.

Supporters arrived carrying UPKO placards and flags, filling the hall with cheers in support of the party and its candidate for the N.50 Gum-Gum state seat, Dr Peter Jr Naintin.

UPKO President Datuk Ewon Benedick delivered the keynote address, emphasising the importance of local unity in backing the Sabah First initiative.

Also attracting attention was the presence of former Community Development Leader (PPM), Tuan Haji Jasni, who openly expressed his support for Dr Peter Jr Naintin. His attendance was seen as a morale boost for the party machinery in the area.

In his speech, Ewon reaffirmed UPKO’s commitment to ensuring that the voices of Sabahans are prioritised at both state and national levels.

“The Sabah First programme is not just a slogan; it is a reminder that Sabah’s interests must come first. UPKO will continue to work alongside the people to ensure their welfare is protected,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Peter urged the Gum-Gum community to remain united in bringing positive change to the constituency.

“I am grateful for the overwhelming turnout. This support gives us confidence that we are moving in the same direction, to make Gum-Gum more progressive, comfortable, and secure for everyone,” he stated.

The strong attendance at Dewan Gum-Gum Batu 16 is seen as a positive sign for UPKO’s campaign in the constituency ahead of the Sabah General Election.
