KOTA KINABALU - The United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO) Papar Division has set its sights on garnering 5000 members before the next State Election, according to division chief Datuk Gilbert Sham.
Currently, the division boasts a membership of 3570 individuals spread across 19 branches. Sham revealed that the organisation previously had 38 branches, but they had merged them to streamline operations and enhance efficiency.
During the UPKO Mini Convention held at Kg Biau Papar Community Hall, Gilbert stressed the importance of the party's presence in Limbahau. He said the party's leadership, as well as the leadership of Sabah's Pakatan Harapan, should take note of UPKO's commitment to stand in the N27 Limbahau constituency during the upcoming state election.
Gilbert expressed his hope that an UPKO candidate will be fielded in that particular constituency, emphasising the party's dedication to making a significant impact in the upcoming election.
“With our target of 5000 members in sight, UPKO Papar Division is determined to strengthen its position and actively contribute to the political landscape of Sabah,” he shares.
During the convention which was graced and launched by UPKO President Datuk Ewon Benedick, Gilbert shared numerous challenges and inadequacies in every village. These issues included the need for infrastructure development and the economic growth of rural areas, the absence of community gatherings and weekly or daily local produce markets.
“We appeal for the improvement of village roads outside the town, urging the government to upgrade them to concrete roads. This enhancement would provide convenience and benefits to both vendors and villagers, facilitating smoother transportation and accessibility.”
“Furthermore, attention should be drawn to the Pan Borneo road between Kinarut and Papar, where the installation of lamp posts at junctions and the functionality of several U-turns remain unresolved. Of particular concern is the U-turn located in Kg Mook, Kinarut, which experiences severe congestion, resulting in queues stretching several kilometers during morning and evening rush hours.”
“Urgent action is requested from the Public Works Department to address this critical issue and alleviate traffic congestion.”
“In light of these matters, it is recommended that the construction of an "elevated U-turn" be considered as the most suitable solution. This proposal aims to mitigate traffic congestion and ensure the smooth flow of vehicles along the Pan Borneo road.”
“With a young and capable leader at the helm, Papar can look forward to a brighter future, marked by continued progress and effective solutions to address the needs of its residents,” he said.
He also handed forms from several new members who joined UPKO, to the party president.
Ewon, who is the Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (MEDAC) later answered by saying that on the candidate, he would present this intent to the Chief Minister as an associate in the state government and the political party, Pakatan Harapan.
The inedquacies shared by Gilbert will be looked into through the relevant authorities as well as MEDACs agencies.
