PENAMPANG: The participants of the Basic Reflexology Course held by Koperasi Industry Desa Sabah Berhad for two days here are urged to apply their skills to generate income.

Yayasan Bank Rakyat Chairman (YBR) Datuk Phillip Lasimbang said the skills acquired should not be left as mere experience but as a platform to go further in the industry.

According to him, the 28 individuals who took part in the course should join forces to not only improve, refine, and advance their skills, but also to establish their own thriving reflexology shop where they can empower and employ other talented reflexologists.

“The most important thing to do is marketing and advertisement of your services so you can reach a wider market. I understand that this is not easy, but it’s not an improbable,” he said adding that if they needed start-up assistance there are many agencies under the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperative (MEDC) that can be approached for help.

Speaking during the closing ceremony, he stressed that the MEDC Minister is Datuk Ewon Benedick, the Penampang Member of Parliament and he is very passionate about education, poverty eradication and entrepreneurship.

There are many agencies under MEDC that can help aspiring entrepreneurs such as TEKUN and AIM, Phillip said.

He encouraged the participants to hone their skills in the advance course which will be carried out by the Koperasi Industry Desa Sabah Berhad, which will be more comprehensive.

"Don’t simply attend courses after courses without utilising the skills you've acquired," he emphasised. He went on to stress that YBR is committed to supporting such programmes and hopes that all participants will fully take advantage of these opportunities to enhance their skills, ultimately benefiting themselves in the process.

Meanwhile, Koperasi Industry Desa Sabah Berhad which was registered last year is led by Bryan Matasing and the course, supported by Yayasan Bank Rakyat was the first event held by his cooperative.

They chose to hold the course as he believed that the reflexology course can benefit a lot of interested individuals as an income generating activity.

According to him, they would be holding an advanced course in future to ensure that the participants skills are honed to better serve their clients.

The two-day course starting 24 April, was conducted by Claudius George, an expert in reflexology who is also involved in aromatherapy, Detox and Spa for several years.

Their next programme will be a course to repair mobile phones, he said, adding that this will be aimed for students.
