KIULU: Mastering the English language can empower rural youth to seize future tourism opportunities and pave the way for both personal and professional growth, said Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai.

Speaking at the launch of the English Literacy for Rural Students programme at SMK Tun Fuad Stephens, Joniston emphasised that proficiency in English is an essential skill for rural students to thrive in an increasingly fast-paced and globalised world.

He noted that with the rise of community-based tourism, rural areas such as Kiulu are witnessing an increase in visitors, presenting young people with opportunities to serve as guides and engage directly with tourists while showcasing life in their villages.

As Chairman of the Sabah Tourism Board, Joniston highlighted Kiulu’s growing potential as a summer camp destination for international students—an opportunity that further elevates the value of English fluency among the younger generation.

“If our students are confident in English, they can lead tourism activities, interact with international visitors, and represent their communities in meaningful ways,” said the Kiulu Assemblyman.

He also stressed that English is not only vital for the tourism sector but also serves as a critical foundation for employability and career development.

“Many companies today operate in English, whether it’s writing emails, preparing contracts, or handling key documents.

“Even some government agencies, including the Sabah Tourism Board, use English in daily communication—especially when collaborating with international networks,” he added.

Joniston reminded students that language skills are frequently listed as requirements in job applications, and a strong command of English can provide a competitive advantage in the job market.

The English Literacy for Rural Students programme, which involves over one hundred Form Three and Form Four students, is funded by the Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu (KKRC) and facilitated by TESL trainees and lecturers from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS).

Also present at the event were KKRC President, Datuk George Taitim Tulas, and SMK Tun Fuad Stephens Senior Assistant Principal, Ismail Haji Mat.

“It is encouraging to see TESL trainees and teachers actively involved in this initiative, as their contribution can significantly impact the development of confident English speakers in our rural schools.

"I truly appreciate the efforts of KKRC, UMS TESL lecturers, and students in making this programme possible. I hope more organisations will come forward to invest in initiatives that equip rural students with essential skills and create opportunities for their future success,” Joniston said.

In his remarks, Datuk George affirmed KKRC’s continued support for capacity-building programmes as part of its mission to economically empower rural communities.
