KOTA KINABALU: A long-serving Justice of the Peace (JP) has expressed gratitude to the National Registration Department (NRD) of Sabah for resolving an issue related to his JP stamp.

Datuk David Chong, who raised the concern last month, met recently with State NRD Director Ervinah Kebahi @ Syarafina Ibrahim at the Mini Putrajaya Complex to discuss the matter.

“On behalf of all JPs in Sabah, I would like to thank the Director for resolving this dispute. I believe some officers, particularly from the Peninsula, were unaware of the roles of JPs in Sabah,” Chong stated.

The Director has issued instructions to the officers to accept the JP stamp used for certifying documents as true copies, according to Chong.

Having used the JP stamp for about 20 years, Chong faced rejection earlier this year when attesting certain documents. He expressed relief that Ervinah, a Sabahan, understands the responsibilities and powers of state-appointed JPs.

Chong explained that all JPs must pass an examination before their appointment. In the Peninsula, JPs are known as Commissioners for Oaths, appointed by the Federal Courts, while in Sabah, the role is conferred by the State Government.

He emphasised the importance of raising awareness among Federal agencies in Sabah about the JP's role in streamlining processes and reducing bureaucracy.

“We are here to assist the public and expedite their dealings with government officials,” he said.

Chong highlighted that under Section 99 of the Lower Courts Act 1948 (Act 92), JPs in Sabah have the authority to administer oaths and affirmations, make and accept statutory declarations, and certify signatures, similar to a second-class magistrate.
