PUTATAN: The Al-Biruni Observatory in Tanjung Dumpil serves not only as Sabah’s official moon-sighting site but also as a key centre for falak (Islamic astronomy) education and research in the state, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor.
He noted that the observatory holds significant potential to be further developed into a comprehensive hub for falak studies and Islamic astronomy.
“The observatory can be transformed into a competitive, high-technology research centre as well as an educational tourism destination, or astro-tourism hub, contributing to the state’s economic growth,” he said.
To achieve this, he stressed that the centre must be equipped with facilities that meet the required standards, including upgraded observation equipment, interactive exhibition spaces, lecture halls, improved visitor amenities and better tourist-friendly access.
“The State Government stands ready to support efforts to position this observatory as one of Sabah’s icons of educational tourism,” he added.
His speech was delivered by State Minister of Local Government and Housing, ,Datuk Mohd Ariffin Mohd Arif at the launch of the state-level official moon sighting for Ramadan, Syawal and Zulhijjah for the year 1447H/2026, held here on Tuesday.
Hajiji expressed confidence that with strategic planning and close cooperation among stakeholders, the observatory would become a source of pride not only for Muslims but for all Sabahans.
“I hope the younger generation present today will recognise that the fields of falak and astronomy offer vast opportunities for exploration and can develop into meaningful careers that contribute to the advancement of the ummah and the nation,” he said.
He added that events closely linked to Muslim worship carry profound spiritual significance while also reflecting the government’s commitment to managing Islamic religious affairs with responsibility, professionalism and integrity.
