KOTA KINABALU: Former students of St. Francis Convent Secondary School have come together to aid Sister Amalia Dorothy Laudi of Kg Sulit, Paitan, one of the victims of recent devastating floods in the area.
Thirty-eight ladies from the Class of 1975 contributed when the collection was organised by Mary Kiob, who spearheaded the initiative. A total of RM5,359 was raised to support the flood-affected communities under Sister Dorothy’s care.
“We sincerely hope this modest donation will assist you, Sister Dorothy, in continuing your noble mission of restoring and rebuilding the affected communities as you carry out God’s work with strength, resilience, and hope,” Kiob said as she handed over the funds to Sister Dorothy, witnessed by Sister-in-Charge Mary Grace of Stella Maris Convent (Senior Sisters), during a gathering at the convent recently.

Reflecting on her experience, Sister Dorothy, originally from Tambunan, shared: “This has been the worst ordeal of my 21 years serving the Paitan community. During the peak of the flood, the waters reached chest height. Sadly, all the food supplies, stationery, and other essentials stored in my house were submerged for two days. This had never happened before, and I was unprepared.”
The dedicated Franciscan nun is the founder of seven kindergartens across seven villages and a hostel in Paitan. She was assigned to Paitan shortly after graduating from Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia.
Sister Dorothy, who has received numerous awards recognising her vocational achievements, has long benefited from funding and support from philanthropists, benefactors, and well-wishers to sustain her Paitan Mission.
