AUDIO RECORDING: POLICE CONFIRM HAVING TAKEN STATEMENT FROM ANWAR

Datuk Anwar Ibrahim

28 April 2021

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have confirmed taking down the statement from opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday in connection with the audio recording of a conversation purportedly between him and UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Huzir Mohamed said Anwar was called to the Bukit Aman Classified Criminal Investigation Unit office after he received an order to investigate from the public prosecutor in accordance with the provisions under Section 108 (2) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

“Investigation is being carried out under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, namely statements that cause or can cause alarm to the public, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for the improper use of network facilities or network services,” he said in a statement.

He said it was a normal procedure to call up the PKR president to complete the investigation, apart from helping to identify the individual who made the audio recording as well the motive for the audio to be shared.

Huzir said a total of 18 police reports were received from 17 political representatives and one individual urging that an investigation be carried out to determine the authenticity or if there were irresponsible parties falsifying the audio clip to provoke public fear and disharmony between the two political parties.

He explained that the audio recording, which went viral, had given various negative perceptions and caused public concern based on comments on social media as the two individuals are influential political leaders. -Bernama
