KOTA KINABALU: A new book exploring the pivotal political and economic developments that have shaped Sabah’s trajectory within Malaysia was officially launched this morning at the Sabah State Library, Tanjung Aru branch.

Entitled Sabah’s Rocky Road to Malaysia: Events that Shaped Sabah’s Political and Economic Realities, the book is authored by Datuk Johan Arriffin and represents his third publication in the Sabah–Malaysia series.

The launch ceremony, held under the Program Lanskap Pengarang: Menyingkap Karya, Meraikan Penulis, was officiated by the Chairman of Sabah Invest Berhad, Datuk Roger Chin.

In his address, Roger described the publication as a significant contribution to ongoing discourse on Sabah’s historical experience and its position within the Federation.

“This event is not merely about launching a book; it is about honouring a voice that has consistently sought to articulate and clarify the Sabah narrative,” he said.

Roger noted that Johan is well known for his commentary on Sabah’s political and economic landscape. His earlier works, Unequal Partners and Revisiting the Social Contract, were nominated for the STAR–Popular Award for Best Non-Fiction in 2004 and 2005.

He added that the latest book revisits key historical episodes, including the long-standing Sulu–Philippines claim, demographic concerns highlighted by the Royal Commission of Inquiry, the rotation system for Chief Ministers, the 1976 “Double Six” plane crash, and the 2013 Tanduo intrusion.

According to Roger, these events not only influenced policy and governance but also helped shape the resilience and identity of the people of Sabah.

“Sabah’s story is not merely a chronicle of adversity; it stands as a testament to perseverance and unity in the face of a challenging journey,” he said.

He also commended the Sabah State Library for organising the event, emphasising that libraries should function as dynamic platforms for intellectual engagement and public discourse.

Roger encouraged the public to read the book, underscoring that an understanding of history is vital to shaping Sabah’s future.

The event was attended by library officials, community leaders, academics, local writers and members of the public.
