SANDAKAN: The CAKNA Special Recovery Programme continues to show positive year-on-year progress through high-impact activities emphasising meaningful learning and authentic experiences.

Jointly organised by the Special Recovery Unit, Sandakan District Education Office (PPD) Learning Sector, and Sandakan Special Recovery Teachers' Council, the programme has been phased since 2023 with tailored approaches to meet special needs pupils' learning requirements.

In 2023, a Special Recovery Carnival at Dewan SMKA Tun Juhar featured interactive station games to strengthen literacy and numeracy foundations in a fun learning atmosphere.

2024 brought the Knowledge Expedition themed around birthdays at Mydin Sandakan, offering contextual learning through real-life scenarios like shopping and daily interactions.

In 2025, the Chef Awakening programme at SMK Muhibbah focused on life skills, exposing pupils to practical cooking with ingredient measurements to reinforce basic mathematical concepts.

For 2026, the initiative continues with an educational visit to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC), blending outdoor learning, environmental awareness, and hands-on experiences.

Deputy District Education Officer (Learning Sector), Suhaimi Othman, stated: "Every activity not only aims to boost academic achievement but also builds pupils' confidence and ability to apply learning in real life. 'Small efforts, big hopes' is the principle guiding this programme to ensure no child is left behind in education."

The initiative enjoys broad support from stakeholders committed to empowering special needs education.
