KOTA KINABALU: DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) Sabah Chief Chan Loong Wei has called for urgent action to safeguard children following the circulation of a disturbing video on social media that allegedly depicts violence against a child.
Chan said the incident has sparked widespread public concern and underscored the pressing need for authorities to respond decisively to any allegation involving the safety and welfare of children. He urged the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to act without delay by launching a full investigation and taking all necessary steps to protect those involved.
“Any allegation of violence against a child must be treated as a matter of the highest priority,” Chan said, stressing that child abuse is not merely a private or domestic issue, but a serious societal crime with lasting consequences.
He highlighted that children are especially vulnerable and often unable to defend themselves or seek help. As such, the state and society share a collective responsibility to ensure their protection. Failure to act swiftly, he warned, risks further harm and sends the wrong message that abuse can be ignored or excused.
Chan emphasised that once the authenticity of the video is established, the authorities must ensure the immediate safety of the affected child or children, provide appropriate medical and psychological assistance, and hold those responsible fully accountable under the law. He added that a comprehensive investigation should determine the full scope of the incident and whether it falls under child abuse, domestic violence, or other criminal offences.
He also urged the public to exercise restraint and responsibility when engaging with the issue online, reminding users that careless sharing or commentary could retraumatise the child involved. Instead, those with credible information should cooperate with the police or relevant welfare agencies to support the investigation.
“Protecting children is not optional; it is a fundamental duty of any caring society,” Chan said.
He concluded by calling on the government, enforcement agencies, and the wider community to strengthen cooperation in preventing abuse and ensuring that every child grows up in a safe, secure, and nurturing environment.
