Chef Romie Chua to Lead Borneo 2026 Culinary Clash

KOTA KINABALU: Renowned Chef Romie Chua has been named Chief Judge for the Culinary Competition at Borneo Exhibition 2026, promising a showcase of passion, creativity, and skill across Sabah's vibrant food scene.


"It is truly my honour to serve as Chief Judge," Chua said. "I look forward to working with fellow jurors to evaluate entries with fairness and professionalism, while appreciating the behind-the-scenes team. Most of all, I value witnessing competitors' unique stories, styles, and love for culinary arts."

He urged participants to push boundaries in taste, presentation, technique, originality, and narrative.


"This is more than a contest, it's a celebration of talent, innovation, and evolving heritage. To all, the very best, may it inspire and elevate your journey."


The competition features three categories: Sabah Traditional Cuisine Display (200 entrants), Fruit & Vegetable Carving (100 entrants), and Pastry Showpiece (300 entrants), drawing a total of 600 competitors.

Daisy Mak, Chairwoman of the organising committee, welcomed participants, "This event unites passionate individuals to celebrate creativity, skill, and our rich heritage. Our goal is to position Sabah as Borneo's dynamic F&B hub, promoting local food, culture, and talent."


Even on a modest scale, Mak sees it as a launchpad for growth and industry connections.


"You represent the spirit and future of Sabah's culinary world. Let's elevate excellence together."


Prize Breakdown


Sabah Traditional Cuisine Display: 1st RM800 + medal + certificate; 2nd RM500; 3rd RM300.


Fruit & Vegetable Carving: 1st RM500 + medal + certificate; 2nd RM300; 3rd RM200.


Pastry Showpiece: 1st RM1,000 + medal + certificate; 2nd RM800; 3rd RM500.


The event spotlights Sabah's culinary identity, blending tradition with innovation to inspire appreciation and professional growth.
