KUALA LUMPUR: On 23 April 2026, backed by a Malaysian government agency and timed with the China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit Secretariat's push for deeper regional economic, trade, and digital collaboration, the opening ceremony of the 2nd China (Guangxi)–ASEAN College Students Invitational Competition on Digital Economy and AI Application Innovation took place in Kuala Lumpur.
Under the theme "Digital Intelligence Empowerment - Creating a Connected Future", the event aligns with China-ASEAN digital economy trends under the RCEP framework and the Belt and Road Initiative. It draws teams from universities across China and ASEAN nations to build an international benchmark for industry-education integration and youth exchange. Hosted by the China-Malaysia Institute of Modern Craftsmanship of Digital Economy, and co-organised by Guangxi Vocational College of Finance and Guangxi Tus Innovation Cross-Border E-Commerce Co., Ltd., it garnered strong support from governments, businesses, and academia in both countries.
At the ceremony, speakers including Li Gaoyan, Party Committee Secretary of Guangxi Financial Vocational College; Prof. Dato' Indera Ir. Dr. Lee Sze Wei, President of Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology; Zhuge Ronghe, Deputy General Manager of Guangxi Tus Innovation Cross-Border E-Commerce Co., Ltd. and Executive Director of the AI Cross-Border Digital Economy Committee of the Guangxi International Chamber of Commerce, praised the platform's role in cross-border integration. They voiced hopes of using it to strengthen practical China-ASEAN digital economy ties.
A highlight was the plaque unveiling, designating WEHIVE GLOBAL MARTECH SDN BHD—a leading Malaysian digital marketing tech firm—as the "China-Malaysia Institute of Modern Craftsmanship of Digital Economy Data Annotation and Corpus Training Base". This joint milestone advances foundational AI data services, supplying industry-grade corpus resources and real-world training for regional digital talent. It bolsters project technical delivery and commercialisation, forging a "competition + training + industry" chain that aligns education, talent, industry, and innovation.
This edition features major upgrades focused on talent cultivation and research commercialisation. It introduces an innovative scoring system where teams must use mainstream AI tools to create project posters, tackling "concept-over-practice" pitfalls and embedding real skills. It promotes multicultural teams, with China and ASEAN students forming cross-border groups for cultural exchange, technical synergy, and idea fusion. It also boosts commercialisation, offering winners cash prizes plus full incubation at Nanning's Overseas Talent Offshore Innovation Base to close the "last mile" to market via a "competition–cultivation–incubation–implementation" cycle.
Drawing on the Institute's innovative model, the competition empowers youth entrepreneurship with AI, nurturing talents with global vision, hands-on skills, and creativity for sectors like cross-border e-commerce and digital finance.
It will continue bridging China-ASEAN digital growth, fuelling Belt and Road industry-education fusion.
