China-Malaysia Relations Strengthen as Bilateral Ties Reach New Heights in 2026

KOTA KINABALU:  Remarkable progress of China-Malaysia relations, was achieved in 2025 emphasising the deepening strategic partnership and expanding cooperation between the two nations.


In his speech at the 2026 Chinese New Year Reception, Consul General Zhu Xinglong noted that 2025 marked a milestone in bilateral ties, with high-level exchanges including President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Malaysia, the second in 12 years, signifying a new era of closer collaboration.


“The joint statement was made showing the two countries’ commitment to jointly building the high-level strategic China-Malaysia community with a shared future, which ushered the two countries into a new phase of bilateral relations’ development,” Zhu remarked.

He further expressed optimism that relations would continue to grow stronger, stating, “We will advance China–Malaysia relations and China–Sabah cooperation steadily and sustainably into a new ‘Golden 50 Years,’ taking our relationship to new heights.”


Trade and economic cooperation continue to flourish, with China maintaining its position as Malaysia’s largest trading partner for 17 consecutive years. In 2025, bilateral trade reached an impressive US$191.66 billion despite a challenging global economy.


Zhu highlighted ongoing projects such as the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), which has achieved 91% completion, and the “Two Countries, Twin Parks,” noting that these developments have “become a landmark achievement of high-quality BRI development.”

He also emphasised the importance of expanding cooperation in the digital economy and green development, adding, “collaboration in these fields has continued to expand, bringing tangible benefits to the peoples of both countries.”


People-to-people exchanges have also seen a vibrant surge, with Malaysia, especially Sabah and Labuan, becoming key destinations for Chinese tourists and visitors. Zhu noted the signing of a mutual visa exemption agreement, which “makes spontaneous travel a reality,” and shared that “4.77 million Chinese tourists visited Malaysia in 2025, with around 690,000 traveling to Sabah.”


These exchanges foster greater cultural understanding and trust, ultimately strengthening the friendship between the peoples of China and Malaysia. “The frequent exchanges of people not only generate vitality and business opportunities but also deepen trust and friendship,” Zhu stated, “laying a solid foundation for further cooperation in the years to come.”


“In the new year, the Consulate General stands ready to work hand in hand with friends from all sectors in Sabah and Labuan. With the speed of a galloping horse, the drive to take the lead, and the perseverance to press forward without pause, we will advance China–Malaysia relations and China–Sabah cooperation steadily and sustainably into a new “Golden 50 Years,” taking our relationship to new heights.”


Also present during the event were the Guest of Honour Finance Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun who represented the Chief Minister Datu Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor, Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan former Chief Minister, Datuk Yong Teck Lee who is also a former Chief Minister and Datuk Roger Chin nominated Assemblyman among many others.
