SANDAKAN: The lack of clear no-smoking signage and the absence of designated smoking areas at Sandakan Airport have triggered complaints from tourists and members of the public.

Former Assemblyman for Karamunting Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin said he has received numerous complaints regarding enforcement action taken against individuals caught smoking in outdoor areas of the airport, particularly along the arrival routes.

He said the main issue stems from the shortage of clear, visible no-smoking signs, coupled with the absence of detailed markings indicating where smoking is permitted.

According to him, the situation has not only caused dissatisfaction among visitors but also raised concerns that it could negatively affect the image of Sandakan and Sabah as tourist destinations.

“In several locations, especially along the main arrival routes and outdoor areas, there are insufficient signs. Tourists who have just arrived find it difficult to understand the existing rules and may inadvertently breach the ban without any intention to do so,” he said.

George added that imposing fines under such circumstances could be seen as unfair, as the offences arise from confusion rather than deliberate non-compliance.

In response, he held discussions with Sandakan Airport officer Mohamad Nazri and Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) Health Officer Nicholas Choong on the need to install clearer no-smoking signage and to provide designated smoking areas.

He proposed that the authorities immediately install more no-smoking signs at strategic locations, while clearly differentiating between prohibited areas and designated smoking zones to ensure visitors can easily understand the regulations.

“If clear signage is in place and violations still occur, enforcement action is justified. However, when visitors are not adequately informed, a verbal warning should be prioritised,” he said.

George also stressed that with Visit Malaysia Year 2026 approaching, all relevant parties must be more attentive to the first impressions experienced by tourists upon arriving in the state.

He noted that airports serve as the main gateways for visitors, and any negative experience at this early stage could have a significant impact on their overall perception of Sandakan and Sabah.
