KOTA KINABALU: Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, Chairman of the Sabah Tourism Board (STB), has put forth an exciting proposal to explore the concept of a creators camp, inspired by the recent success of the Tumimung digital content event.

Organised by the STB, this homegrown initiative attracted 70 participants, including social media content creators, product owners, and representatives from tourism associations, facilitating valuable discussions and networking opportunities.

In his closing speech at the Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort on Friday, September 27, Joniston who is also Assistant Minister of Tourism Culture and Environment envisioned an outdoor creators camp as a way to build on the momentum from Tumimung.

“Imagine gathering creators in a breathtaking outdoor setting that showcases our stunning destinations, rather than confining them indoors,” he said.

“This approach would not only spark creativity but also offer a unique experience, promoting Sabah in ways that benefit everyone involved.”

The term "Tumimung" comes from the Dusun language, meaning "to gather" or "berkumpul," perfectly encapsulating the spirit of collaboration and creativity that Joniston aims to foster with this new initiative.

He further suggested expanding participation to include Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia creators, enhancing collaboration and idea-sharing.

The two-day Tumimung event featured insightful panel discussions and sharing sessions.

Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort Marketing and Communications Director Claudina Wong and Traverse Tours Sales and Marketing Manager Valentine G. Willard discussed working with content creators.

Content creators Mem Umie of Mem Umie Jalan-Jalan Travel and Tour and Pison Jaujip of Ropuhan Di Tanak Wagu shared their journeys from content creators to product owners.

Other notable speakers included Zachary Yeoh of TikTok Malaysia, who presented a case study on ‘The Evolution of Content’, School of Ultimate Learning founder Ann Osman, who spoke on ‘Content Creation’, and Adam Shamil, who discussed ‘Building Your Brand.’

The event concluded today with a fun outdoor city hunt activity.
