TUARAN: While most hotels discourage guests from bringing durians onto their premises, Shangri-La Rasa Ria took a different approach by hosting a one-day Durian Fiesta on Thursday.
The resort celebrated the ‘King of Fruits’ in an authentic Sabahan setting at its Pogun Tokou venue, which is located a short distance away from the main accommodation areas.
The venue was transformed into a lively local tamu (traditional marketplace), featuring premium durians sourced from orchards in nearby Tenghilan.

Guests were fully immersed in Sabah’s agricultural heritage, with an abundant selection of fresh durians available on site. The initiative also reflected the resort’s commitment to supporting local farmers and promoting sustainable regional agriculture.
In-house guests and visitors were offered a carefully curated à la carte selection of durians with distinctive flavour profiles, including the popular D24, known for its creamy texture; D123, graded B and K; Golden Bun, noted for its vibrant yellow flesh and sweetness; and Durian Susu, prized for its smooth, milky taste.
For dedicated durian enthusiasts, an all-you-can-eat durian buffet was also available at RM88 per person.

The Durian Fiesta marked the first event of its kind organised by Shangri-La Rasa Ria. The resort has long maintained active collaborations with local communities as part of its environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives.
Pogun Tokou, Shangri-La Rasa Ria’s latest product offering, is positioned as a premier MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) venue that integrates Sabahan culture, sustainability and refined hospitality. Meaning “Our Land” in the indigenous Dusun language, the venue is designed to foster meaningful connections through shared cultural experiences.
Pogun Tokou comprises three distinct traditional structures, each offering a unique atmosphere for events, and overlooks a forest reserve with views stretching towards the South China Sea.

“We have big plans for Pogun Tokou and the limitless possibilities it offers for themed events as a uniquely Bornean venue,” said Fiona Hagan, General Manager of Shangri-La Rasa Ria.
“Hosting our inaugural Durian Day here demonstrates the versatility of the venue and our ability to curate distinctive experiences for our guests,” she added.
