Fishing Vessel Held Over Licence Breach

KOTA KINABALU : The attempt by a Local Fishing Vessel (LFV) to carry out illegal trawling activities within three nautical miles from the shore backfired when it was detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (Malaysian Maritime) Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan last Monday.

Sabah Maritime Director, First Admiral Mohd Khairulanuar Abd Majid @ Razali, said the detention was carried out by a Malaysian Maritime patrol boat during a routine patrol, aided by the Sea Surveillance System (SWASLA) Station in Sabah.

“Upon inspection, the vessel was found to be operating approximately one nautical mile northwest of Tanjung Tembungo.

“At the time of detention, it was conducting illegal trawling activities and was manned by a skipper along with five crew members, all of whom were Indonesian nationals,” said Khairulanuar.

He further stated that the vessel had breached the terms of a valid licence under Section 8(b) of the Fisheries Act 1985 by engaging in fishing activities in a prohibited area.

“All crew members, along with a mixed catch of fish weighing around one tonne, were detained. The estimated value of the seizure, including the catch and the vessel, is RM45,000,” he added.

Khairulanuar explained that the use of side trawling methods within three nautical miles not only contravenes the law but also poses a serious threat to the marine ecosystem.

“This method can destroy natural habitats, disrupt fish breeding cycles, and most notably, affect the livelihood of traditional fishermen who rely on coastal areas,” he said.

As such, the Malaysian Maritime will continue to intensify joint patrols and surveillance in key maritime areas through the SWASLA system, along with the strategic deployment of maritime assets.
