KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor has called for greater participation in cocoa cultivation in Sabah, highlighting its immense growth potential amid surging global demand.

He urged more farmers to take up cocoa farming and to expand beyond the 3,000 hectares currently under cultivation in the state.

He noted that Malaysian cocoa exports reached a record RM15.06 billion last year, three times higher than in 2023, reflecting rising international interest in high-quality cocoa products.

“We are proud that Sabah has been instrumental in this success, contributing over 60 per cent of the nation’s total cocoa output,” he said, adding that approximately 3,000 cocoa farmers in the districts of Ranau, Tenom, Kota Marudu, Keningau, and Kuamut have already benefitted from the sector’s growth.

The Chief Minister’s remarks were delivered by Deputy Chief Minister I and Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry, Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, during the Cocoa Gala Dinner held in conjunction with the Malaysia International Cocoa Fair 2025 (MICF 2025) at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC).

Hajiji described the cocoa industry as a strategic economic driver for Sabah, capable of generating sustainable income, creating jobs, and fostering rural development.

He emphasised that Sabah’s fertile land, favourable climate, and strong support from the Malaysian Cocoa Board position the state to become a regional hub for premium cocoa production.

He praised the Malaysian Cocoa Board for its dedication and strategic initiatives in advancing the industry’s development and global competitiveness.

Looking ahead, the Chief Minister expressed confidence that the Malaysia International Cocoa Fair (MICF) and related events would yield long-term benefitsattracting new investments, forging global partnerships, and strengthening Sabah’s position not only as Malaysia’s top cocoa-producing state but also as an emerging destination for agri-business, tourism, and cultural exchange.

“We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to all international exhibitors, cocoa producers, local entrepreneurs and SMEs, academic institutions, as well as our sponsors and partners, both domestic and international, who have contributed to the success of MICF 2025,” he added.
