KOTA KINABALU: Good Shepherd Services (GSS) has been lauded for a decade of dedicated community work that has helped transform the lives of women, children, and families across Sabah.

Speaking at GSS’s 10th Anniversary Dinner here on Friday Sabah Tourism Board Chairman, Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, praised the organisation for its long-standing commitment to uplifting vulnerable communities through practical empowerment and skills-based initiatives.

He said GSS’s focus on building resilience and independence among families mirrors the state’s wider push for inclusive and sustainable growth through tourism and community development.

“Just as community-based tourism enables rural families to earn a living through homestays, local food, and nature-based experiences, GSS’s Community Kitchen initiative empowers urban families to be self-reliant and resilient,” Joniston said.

He noted that GSS’s approach to empowerment, providing skills training, income-generation opportunities, and support networks, demonstrates how local action can create meaningful change at the grassroots level.

Joniston also highlighted the importance of collaboration between non-governmental organisations, government agencies, and the private sector in driving sustainable development.

“GSS’s partnerships with Universiti Malaysia Sabah and various foundations show how collective effort can strengthen livelihoods and foster long-term community resilience,” he added.

The dinner, held to celebrate ten years of GSS’s service, brought together community partners, volunteers, and supporters who have contributed to the organisation’s mission of empowering those in need.

“Such initiatives embody the essence of sustainable development, ensuring progress that benefits everyone, from rural villages to urban neighbourhoods,” Joniston said.

Among those present were the Archbishop of Kota Kinabalu, Most Reverend Datuk John Wong; GSS Chairperson, Sr Helen Vythialingam; and Organising Chairperson, Patricia Ubing.
