KOTA KINABALU: Cyclists from Chennai, India officially began their Sabah adventure on Monday, exploring the state on two wheels as part of the Ride Sabah North Borneo Cycling Familiarisation (FAM) Tour.
The six-day, five-night tour is led by Tourism Malaysia–Chennai and involves members of the Chennai Cycling Association. It aims to showcase Sabah’s diverse landscapes and cycling potential to the Indian market.
The ride was flagged off in the state capital from the Sabah Tourism Board (STB) building by its Chief Executive Officer, Julinus Jeffery Jimit. Also present at the flag-off ceremony were Director of Tourism Malaysia–Chennai, Hishamuddin Mustafa, and Director of Tourism Malaysia Sabah, Haryanty Abu Bakar.
Held under the theme “Sabah Cycling Paradise, Malaysia Truly Asia”, the tour covers several key destinations, including Kota Belud, Kota Marudu, Kudat, Kundasang and Tamparuli. Participants will experience a combination of coastal views, cool highland terrain and culturally rich towns.
The initiative is supported by Royal Brunei Airlines, which has facilitated the participation of influential delegates and cycling influencers from India, helping to amplify Sabah’s appeal within the growing cycling tourism segment.
The tour forms part of the Sabah Tourism Board’s strategic efforts to strengthen the state’s visibility in the Indian market and attract a wider base of visitors with special-interest travel offerings.
In line with this objective, the Sabah Tourism Board will also take part in Outbound Travel Mart (OTM) 2026 in Mumbai next week, where the Ride Sabah North Borneo Cycling Tour is scheduled to be officially launched.
The initiative supports ongoing efforts to position Sabah as a premier cycling and eco-tourism destination for the Indian market, in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2026 and Visit Sabah 2027.
