TAMBUNAN: Over 5,000 residents of Kg. Sunsuron, living within 72 acres, face pressing challenges mainly overcrowded housing, heightened fire risks, limited basic amenities and persistent health concerns.

In this respect restructuring of housing should be carried out to ensure safety and well being of the villagers.

Sabah’s Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry, Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey G. Kitingan said this during a Dialogue with Kg. Sunsuron Residents held at Dewan Datuk John Gaisah.

Dr Jeffrey said,“We want to ensure this village becomes more organised, safe, comfortable and modern. Houses will be numbered, recreational facilities will be upgraded, and disaster risks reduced.”

He also announced plans for the construction of a temporary settlement centre and the development of the new Tambunan ‘Smart City’ in Kaingaran, near Mount Trusmadi. The project aims to provide young people with opportunities to own their own homes, in line with Tambunan’s modern development aspirations.

In addition, he stressed the importance of protecting the environment, particularly rivers and hills that are at risk of landslides if exploited without proper control.

From a health perspective, residents were reminded to observe the Malaysian Healthy Living National Agenda (ANMS), which emphasises balanced eating with reduced sugar intake, proper dental care, regular medical check-ups, and moderation in alcohol consumption.

The dialogue also gave residents the opportunity to voice suggestions, concerns and needs for the development of their villagage

As a gesture of appreciation, Dr Jeffrey presented a contribution to Irene Jane Henry, a Sunsuron native who represented Sabah at the 2025 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships (20–30 August), where she won a silver medal and a bronze medal: bringing pride to Tambunan and the state of Sabah.

Dr Jeffrey expressed confidence that the restructuring will make Kg. Sunsuron more orderly, progressive, and capable of improving residents’ quality of life, with safety, better amenities, and opportunities for the younger generation as top priorities.
