KOTA KINABATANGAN : The Seri Milian Township, a 157.48-acre mixed development, is set to become a key growth hub, revitalising Kinabatangan’s economy, attracting investment, and strengthening its role as a transit point between Tawau, Sandakan, and Kota Kinabalu, said Sabah Deputy Chief Minister II, Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam.
“This development is timely, as it can act as a catalyst for economic growth through the provision of commercial lots, small and medium-scale industries, and job opportunities for the local population,” he said in his welcoming speech at the Groundbreaking Ceremony of the Seri Milian New Township held at Dataran Pekan Kota Kinabatangan.
The ceremony was officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.
Dr Joachim added that the township’s strategic location also holds potential to attract new investors, particularly in industrial construction that would complement the existing palm oil industry. In addition, it is expected to draw both domestic and international tourists looking for accommodation before continuing their journey to the district’s ecotourism sites.
He explained that the project, implemented through a joint venture with Sunmow Construction Sdn. Bhd., utilises a full design-build-finance model and will be equipped with various modern amenities. These include 58 units of 1½-storey semi-detached light industrial lots, 80 units of 2-storey terrace industrial lots, 256 units of 2-storey shop lots, 548 single-storey terrace homes, a 13-storey hotel with 200 rooms, a mosque, a petrol station, a tourist information centre, a supermarket, futsal hall, food court, open parking, and a new office for the Kinabatangan District Council.
“This development will enhance surrounding property values and increase the local council’s revenue through assessment tax, service charges, licensing, and rental income. Most importantly, it will contribute to the supply of affordable housing for the people,” he added.
He said the establishment of the Seri Milian New Township marks a significant development leap in Kinabatangan, not only transforming the face of Kota Kinabatangan town but also driving the growth of new urban centres in nearby areas.
“I am confident that this project will act as a catalyst for the implementation of other planned developments, in collaboration with the Kinabatangan District Council, for the betterment of the local community — with the support and approval of the State Government,” he said.
Dr Joachim also expressed his appreciation to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Haji Hajiji Noor for his approval and support of the project, and extended his gratitude to all parties involved in the success of the groundbreaking ceremony.
Also present were Minister of Community Development and People’s Wellbeing cum Sugut Assemblyman; Chairman of the Housing and Town Development Board cum Kuamut Assemblyman, Datuk Masiung Banah; Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government and Housing (KKTP), Datuk Dr Jamili Nais; Director of the Sabah State Community Development Leadership Unit (UPPM), Datuk Awang Kadin Tang; President of Sandakan Municipal Council, Walter Kenson; Chairman of Kinabatangan District Council, Willey Lampaki; and the organising chairman who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Kinabatangan District Council, Zuldahri Hj Tujoh, along with officers from various government agencies.
