KOTA KINABALU: A coordination meeting between the P.172 Kota Kinabalu Parliamentary Office and Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) was held yesterday afternoon, focusing on infrastructure, public safety and environmental cleanliness in the city.
The meeting was led by the Member of Parliament for Kota Kinabalu, Datuk Chan Foong Hin, and the Mayor of Kota Kinabalu, Dato’ Sri Dr Sabin Samitah. Discussions centred on ensuring the well-being and safety of city residents remain a key priority.
Chan conveyed feedback gathered by the P.172 team from local residents, highlighting concerns over the poor condition of potholed roads, insufficient street lighting and public illumination—particularly at night—the need for enhanced drainage maintenance, and the overall standard of urban cleanliness.
According to Chan, the issues were discussed openly and constructively as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between the parliamentary office and the local authority, enabling public concerns to be addressed more efficiently and effectively.
He also welcomed the mayor’s recent announcement that 1,500 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras will be installed at strategic locations across Kota Kinabalu in the first phase of a citywide security initiative. The project is currently under discussion with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and is expected to commence this year.
The P.172 Office described the initiative as a long-awaited and comprehensive measure to enhance public safety, including for tourists, while helping to curb street crime that has previously affected the city’s image, such as slingshot attacks on tourists and snatch thefts.
The parliamentary office reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining close collaboration with DBKK to transform Kota Kinabalu into a cleaner, safer, more liveable and tourist-friendly city, in line with the goals of sustainable urban development.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Chan presented a basket of locally sourced fruits to Sabin as a gesture of appreciation and support for the local agricultural sector, in line with the “Jom Sapot Buah-Buahan Tempatan” initiative.
