I have taken note of the statements opposing the Federal Government’s proposal to establish a one-stop labour centre in Sabah. As Youth Chief of United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO) Penampang, I believe this issue must be approached with objectivity and a comprehensive understanding.
Any initiative that can assist the youth and people of Sabah in securing employment more easily and effectively should be welcomed, regardless of the proposer.
There is no doubt that Sabah requires a stronger voice in the formulation of labour policies. However, of even greater importance is the need to ensure that implementation at the state level is efficient, people-oriented, and responsive to local realities. We must avoid becoming entangled in rhetoric about “autonomy” if, ultimately, it does not translate into tangible outcomes for the people.
The key questions that must now be addressed are:
Will this centre genuinely serve the needs of employers and jobseekers in Sabah?
Have all relevant stakeholders—including the state government, federal agencies, and local industry players, been brought together to design an approach suited to Sabah’s unique context?
If we are truly committed to safeguarding the dignity and future of Sabah, we must be part of the solution, not merely loud opponents without viable alternatives.
The people are not asking for rhetoric. They are asking for results.
