SANDAKAN: LDP President Chin Su Phin emphasised the importance of unity among Sabahans and the strength of local-based parties during the party’s annual open house held in Sandakan yesterday.
Speaking to reporters, Chin reflected on recent celebrations held in West Coast and Tawau, noting that these gatherings symbolises the growing solidarity among Sabahans across regions.
He pointed out that despite predictions that Warisan would not be able to form the government in the last state election, Chinese voters had initially hoped for Warisan’s victory.

However, he stressed that Chinese support now largely aligns with Warisan, which is part of the opposition.
Chin highlighted a significant trend: Sabahans are uniting behind local-based parties. He expressed confidence that in the upcoming parliamentary elections, local parties will gain strong support and potentially win key seats.
He urged West Malaysian parties not to contest in Sabah’s state elections to allow local parties to grow stronger, though he acknowledged that, in a democracy, competition cannot be prevented entirely.
“Sabahans want to be like Sarawak, with more autonomy,” he said. “They are not against the federal government but seek greater self-governance. That’s why local-based parties will be stronger and more representative of Sabah’s needs.
Chin emphasised that the LDP is committed to working with the federal government to resolve local issues, such as water supply problems, through the party’s structured bureaus across Sabah, including in Luyang, Likas, Senakan, and Tawak.
He stressed the importance of collaboration among Sabah-based parties and leaders, regardless of party affiliations, especially during elections.
He acknowledged the presence of various parties, including those outside the GRS coalition, and called for cooperation among Sabahan leaders. “Even if they insist on using Malay parties to contest, we consider it a friendly match. Ultimately, support for the federal government remains,” he added.
Chin expressed optimism about the coming general election, hoping that LDP could contest and win seats in Sandakan and Kota Kinabalu, particularly in Sandakan where the party has historically been active.
He reiterated the importance of East Malaysia’s push for greater autonomy, emphasising that Sabah’s future lies in strengthening its regional independence within Malaysia.
The open house served as a platform for unity and shared vision among Sabahans, he said, calling on all parties and leaders to work together in building a stronger, more autonomous Sabah, emphasising that unity is key to realising the state’s potential.
The event was attended by members and supporters, reaffirming the party’s commitment to fostering unity and advocating for Sabah’s progress.
