Massive Support for UPKO as Over 2,000 Gather in Donggongon’s Buhavan Square

PENAMPANG: Despite heavy rain, a sea of over two thousand passionate supporters filled the Buhavan Square in Dongonggon on 27 November creating an electrifying atmosphere brimming with anticipation.


The crowd’s excitement reached a crescendo as Datuk Ewon Benedick, President of the United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (UPKO), made his grand entrance.


The moment was met with a thunderous chorus of applause, accompanied by the resonant shout of "Sabah First" echoing throughout the venue. Youthful supporters, vibrant and full of energy, waved UPKO flags high in the air, their voices harmonizing in unison. The hall also vibrated with enthusiasm as the chants of "UPKO" reverberated, symbolising a unifying call for Sabah’s progress and unity.


With a confident and determined stride, Datuk Ewon Benedick appeared before his supporters, greeted by a roar of cheers that underscored their unwavering support and dedication to the party’s cause. As he made his way to the front seat, the energy among the supporters intensified, fuelling a collective sense of hope and purpose.

The excitement continued to build as cheers erupted once more, for the UPKO candidate who stood with him; Billy Joe Dominic for Kapayan State Assembly seat. The supporters’ chants rang out loudly, celebrating the youthful candidate vying for the Kapayan seat. His name was met with enthusiastic applause and flags waving proudly, symbolising renewed hope and steadfast commitment to Sabah’s future.

Similarly, the Moyog UPKO candidate, Datuk Donald Peter Mojuntin, received a warm and heartfelt welcome. Supporters raised their voices in unison, cheering loudly for the seasoned leader known for his unwavering dedication to Moyog’s development. Their collective support underscored a strong sense of unity and resolve to see their leaders succeed.

Organising Chairman Carl Mosoom, who is also a UPKO Supreme Council Member, described as “a clear demonstration of the people’s spirit and desire for change”.


Speaking at the event, Carl said he was deeply moved by the overwhelming support shown by attendees, organisers, volunteers, and the local community. He emphasised that the strong turnout reflected a rising sentiment among Sabahans who are eager for fair development and a brighter future for the state.


“This is not just a gathering, but a sign of the awakening of the people of Sabah,” he said. “We want fair opportunities for our youth, better welfare for families, and a future where no Sabahan is sidelined.”

Carl expressed his highest appreciation to the organising committee, praising their tireless work in ensuring the event ran smoothly. He also acknowledged the contributions of volunteers, technical staff, security personnel, media partners, vendors, and the surrounding communities.


“The success of tonight’s event is the result of our collective effort,” he said. “Without your dedication, an event of this scale would not have been possible.”


Throughout his address, Carl highlighted the movement’s core message, that “Sabah First” is not merely a slogan but a grassroots initiative aimed at empowering the voices of Sabahans. He stressed the importance of unity, cooperation, and the preservation of Sabah’s cultural identity as the state progresses.

“We want Sabah to become a developed state without losing who we are,” he said, calling for improved educational opportunities, stronger support for farmers and fishermen, and solutions to the rising cost of living.


Carl urged the public to remain united and committed to the cause, emphasising that real strength comes from solidarity. “When the people unite, no force can stop us from achieving our aspirations,” he added.


He concluded his speech by encouraging Sabahans to continue supporting the movement, ensuring that their collective voice is heard across the nation.
