SANDAKAN: Representatives from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Sandakan paid a courtesy visit to the Sandakan Parliamentary Service Centre yesterday to discuss a proposed wireless network (WiFi) facility for Pulau Berhala.

The delegation met with Tang Szu Ching, representative of Sandakan Member of Parliament Vivian Wong Shir Yee and the Parliamentary Coordinating Officer for Sandakan. The meeting focused on an application to improve local wireless connectivity on the island, while also seeking to better understand the actual needs of the island’s residents and to coordinate follow-up actions in phases.

Tang said that upgrading network infrastructure on Pulau Berhala is vital to the daily lives of residents, particularly in ensuring access to public services such as education, emergency information dissemination and external communications.

“Stable network connectivity has now become a basic necessity,” she said.

She also highlighted the island’s unique ecological and tourism potential, noting that improved network coverage and service quality would not only enhance residents’ quality of life but could also help spur tourism growth and stimulate the local economy.

According to Tang, the meeting served as an important communication platform for relevant parties to gain a clearer picture of the island’s current conditions and community needs, enabling future assessments and planning to better reflect public expectations.

She added that the Sandakan Parliamentary Office will continue to act as a coordinating body and maintain close cooperation with relevant agencies to expedite efforts to improve communications coverage on the island, in line with established procedures, and to ensure that no community is left behind in network development.
