KOTA KINABALU: Media practitioners in Sabah play a crucial role in shaping public understanding by prioritising reporting on critical developments that significantly impact the state and its people, alongside other important issues.
"I hope that media practitioners maintain their commitment to delivering truthful, verified, and accurate news at the highest standards," said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor during the Kinabalu Press Award (KPA) 2024 ceremony at the Hilton Hotel yesterday.
"Journalists and the media organisations are also responsible for upholding ethics, including verifying information from credible sources, providing balanced coverage encompassing all perspectives. This will ensure the reports remain fair and objective," he said.
The Chief Minister was glad to note that the media in Sabah, in general, has shown support by reporting all the development agendas of the current State Government.
He commended Shell, Petronas, Qhazanah Sabah Berhad and the latest SMJ Energy Sdn Bhd for sponsoring the KPA.
"I hope more will emulate their efforts to support the media industry," he said.
Hajiji also assured the media community that the State Government is dedicated to fostering a fair and just media environment in Sabah.
"We aim to ensure that all voices are heard and all perspectives are respected. Upholding and protecting press freedom is essential for social progress and democratic development.
"The State Government is firmly committed to this principle. Therefore, we will continue to support the annual Kinabalu Press Award to promote journalistic excellence and encourage emerging talent," he stated.
Also present during the event were Sabah Journalist Association (SJA) President Datuk Muguntan Vanar and Organising Chairman Durie Fong.
