PENAMPANG: The Momogun National Congress (MNC) convened a discussion session on the development agenda today, featuring vibrant participation from various ethnic groups who are MNC members.
During the event, attendees were treated to a series of inspiring and enlightening talks delivered by prominent members of the Momogun National Council (MNC).
Datuk Stephen Sampil, the Deputy President of the MNC, provided a comprehensive briefing on the follow-up actions taken to ensure the establishment of the term "Momogun" in official government forms.
This initiative is significant as it aims to promote the recognition and identity of the Momogun community within governmental frameworks.
Following this, Datuk John Maluda, also the Deputy President of the MNC, presented an overview of the Momogun Economic Transformation Agenda (META).
His discussion highlighted the strategic plans and initiatives designed to enhance economic opportunities and development for the Momogun people, emphasising the importance of sustainable growth and community empowerment.
Pediman Jabau, another Deputy President of the MNC, elaborated on using the term "MOMOGUN" in various contexts, reinforcing its cultural and social significance.
He also shared vital information regarding the application process for an annual allocation of RM20,000 for each Momogun Association.
This funding is intended to support local initiatives and projects that align with the goals of the MNC, thereby fostering community development and enhancing the overall well-being of the Momogun population.
The event also saw the signing of a membership declaration by the Tompizos Ethnic group, approved and stamped by Datuk John Maluda, a JP, and witnessed by MNC President Tan Sri Wences Angang.
Speaking to Nabalu News after the event, Wences said, “today's function serves as a follow-up to our convention held on August 1st, which received a very positive response. This event is part of our ongoing efforts, with more follow-up activities planned in the future.”
“We are encouraged by today's attendance, as many members participated and shared a wealth of ideas. All suggestions have been documented, and we will review them during our upcoming Supreme Council meeting. Our next step will be to organise additional workshops to further explore these topics.”
According to him, they are committed to incorporating every suggestion discussed into future workshops and once they identify viable ideas, they will seek ways to implement them effectively.
“In terms of financial support, we plan to approach the government to request an allocation of RM20,000 for each ethnic association that is a member of Momogun,” he stressed.
“Securing this funding would significantly aid in preserving our traditions and culture, enabling associations to conduct activities that promote language retention and cultural education for their children, as well as host seminars and talks.”
Regarding the Harvest Festival, which was suggested by a member to be held by MNC, he said they acknowledge that opinions vary on its organisation, but since the Harvest Festival has been carried out and established by another organisation, it was only proper that they let it be.
“We can have an alternate celebration. However, members of Momogun are free to organise their own Kaamatan celebrations, although it will not be a collective event for Momogun as a whole,” he stressed.
On the status of Momogun to replace the current “Dan Lain Lain” or ‘Others” on Government forms, he said, “We have submitted our declaration to the Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor, the Prime Minister Datuk Anwar Ibrahim, and the Sabah Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin, and we are currently awaiting a response.
"We will continue to pursue this matter, and we are optimistic about a timely resolution. Our Minister, Datuk Ewon Benedick who is the Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperative is actively assisting us in garnering attention for this cause and facilitating implementation. We remain hopeful for a positive outcome soon.”
