KOTA KINABALU: Sabah urgently needs more engineers to support its rapidly growing oil and gas industry, and Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) is poised to assist in cultivating this essential workforce.

UTP Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib emphasised the importance of human resource development for Sabah to establish itself as a hub for oil and gas.

“UTP is committed to contributing to the development of Sabahans, equipping them not only with knowledge but also with the necessary skills and capabilities,” Ibrahim stated during a luncheon with the media, held in conjunction with UTP’s World Engineering, Science and Technology Congress (Estcon) 2024 at the Sabah International Convention Centre.

“The university will serve as a platform to engage with students, enabling collaboration with industries in Sabah,” Ibrahim stated.

He highlighted that UTP offers engineering and technology programs, addressing the growing demand for engineers in the oil and gas sector.

Additionally, he mentioned that UTP has signed memorandums of understanding with Universiti Malaysia Sabah and University College Sabah Foundation.

These MoUs aim to foster collaboration not only in academic development—such as student and lecturer exchanges and joint research—but also in enhancing the universities' contributions to human resource development in the region.
