SANDAKAN: The stern stand by the President of Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) president Walter Kenson in adopting a zero-tolerance policy against illegal cigarette vendors operating in the district is lauded.

Vice President of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) who is also Sandakan Municipal Council, (MPS) member Robert Chong said he support the firm stand taken by the President.

Chong strongly condemned the retaliation and aggressive behaviour displayed by illegal vendors towards enforcement officers who were carrying out their lawful duties

“Such behaviour is nothing short of gangsterism. It is completely unacceptable in a civilised society. If these individuals are allowed to intimidate enforcement officers today, tomorrow they may threaten the wider community,” Chong stressed.

He urged the relevant enforcement agencies to take immediate and decisive action, pointing out that some of these individuals are believed to be operating without valid documentation while selling illegal cigarette brands.

“We cannot allow illegal activities like this to spread and slowly erode the rule of law in our town,” he said.

Chong highlighted that Mile 8 market is a busy commercial hub located about eight miles from Sandakan town, with hundreds of shoplots and a school nearby.

The area also serves as a key stopover for travellers heading to surrounding estates and villages, while nearby industrial areas house many workshops and factories.

“With such a large flow of people daily, the safety and security of the public must be our top priority,” he said.

Chong also called on enforcement agencies to launch a comprehensive 'Operasi Bersepadu' throughout Sandakan to clamp down on all forms of illegal vending activities.

“This is not a small matter. If left unchecked, it could lead to bigger social problems. It is not only about gangster-style intimidation, but the possibility of certain groups gradually taking control or ‘colonising’ public areas through illegal activities,” he warned.

He emphasised that the MPS remains committed to ensuring that Sabahans are properly protected and that law and order is maintained.

Chong also called on the public to play their part by cooperating with authorities.

“I urge members of the public to report any suspicious or unusual activities in their neighbourhoods to the relevant authorities so that prompt action can be taken,” he added.
