Pampang Masters Top Team at Championship

KOTA KINABALU: The Pampang Masters from Penampang secured the highest gold medals at the 12th Sabah Open Masters Athletics Championship, held at the Keningau Sports Complex Stadium from September 21 to 22. Throughout the two-day event, they achieved an impressive total of 56 gold, 36 silver, and 33 bronze medals, totaling 125.
Close behind, the Tuaran Masters finished with a commendable 100 medals, which included 38 gold, 35 silver, and 27 bronze. Rounding out the top three, Tambunan Athletic claimed 75 medals, consisting of 23 gold, 30 silver, and 22 bronze.
The competition featured a diverse array of categories, showcasing the talents of athletes across various disciplines.
Events included the Javelin, Shot Put, Long Jump, and Triple Jump, each testing the strength and technique of the participants.
The 5000-metre Race Walk and 1500-metre Run highlighted endurance and speed, while the 100-metre Dash provided a thrilling display of sprinting prowess.
Additionally, the 4 x 200-metre Relay offered teams the opportunity to demonstrate their coordination and teamwork.
Athletes also competed in the 400-metre event, Discus, High Jump, and Hurdles, each requiring a unique combination of skill, agility, and strategy.
These categories, among others, contributed to a dynamic and exciting championship atmosphere, allowing competitors to showcase their athletic abilities and compete for top honours.
Several athletes set new records during the championship, showcasing their exceptional talent and determination.
Helena Majalang of Pampang Masters claimed gold in the Shot Put with an impressive throw of 6.77 meters, surpassing her previous record of 6.02 meters set in 2022.
Kimih, also known as Florence Monjitol, from Pampang Masters, excelled in the 3000 meters, finishing with a time of 21:18.30 seconds. This performance earned her a gold medal and broke her record of 23:10.58 seconds from the previous year.
Adeline, known as Intim John Umbul, representing Papar Masters, made her mark in the 3000 Metres Race Walk, clocking in at 26:32.00 seconds. This achievement shattered her record of 29:12.96 seconds set in 2019.
In the High Jump, Mohd Salehen Mohd Noor of Tambunan Athletic soared to a height of 1.50 meters, surpassing the previous record held by Chung Yung Khiung and Gan Chee Keong, both of whom had cleared 1.45 metres. These remarkable performances highlight the athletes' dedication and skill, contributing to an exciting and memorable championship.
The event was organised by Sabah Masters Athletic Association (SAMAS) lead by Ramjit Nairulal in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Sabah, the State Sports Council, and Sabah Sports Board.
Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin, Minister of Youth and Sports of Sabah was the guest of honour.
