PENAMPANG: Villagers of Kampung Kuai Kandazon Botung, together with Jentera Pemuda, have taken matters into their own hands to safeguard road users after severe soil erosion and a collapsed section beneath the Kampung Duvanson, Putatan, and Kampung Botung routes raised safety concerns.

As a temporary measure, canvas sheets provided by the Penampang P.174 Parliamentary People’s Service Centre were installed during a community gotong-royong initiative involving villagers and youth volunteers. The request for assistance was formally made through Kampung JKKK Chairperson, Puan Katherine Jikinon, and the Chairman of the Moyog Penampang Community Welfare Association, Billy Jinawat.

Billy said villagers and motorists remain anxious whenever passing the affected stretch of road. He cautioned that the canvas solution is only temporary, as the material typically lasts no more than a month before deteriorating.

“Residents hope the relevant authorities will step in with permanent maintenance measures, as this issue has dragged on for far too long. Sadly, whenever complaints are lodged, responsibility is shifted from one party to another, and to this day the dangerous area has been left unattended,” he said.

The villagers stressed that the safety of road users must be treated as a priority and called on the authorities to deliver a long-term solution without further delay.
