KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged all parties involved in the Gaza conflict to seize the current opportunity to achieve a comprehensive and lasting peace, following reports of encouraging progress in ceasefire negotiations.

Anwar said the latest development offers a semblance of hope after months of unbearable suffering and devastation in the besieged enclave.

“I welcome reports of progress in negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza.

“Every effort that can bring an end to the violence and protect innocent lives must be pursued with sincerity and urgency,” he said in a Facebook post today.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed Malaysia’s firm solidarity with the people of Palestine in their struggle for justice, dignity and statehood, while stressing that the ongoing negotiations should serve as a meaningful step toward sustainable peace.

Earlier today, United States President Donald Trump has announced that Israel and Hamas have agreed on the first phase of a peace framework that aims at a Gaza ceasefire and the release of Israeli captives and Palestinian prisoners.

The announcement follows from Trump’s 20-point plan to end the war on Gaza, which he announced last week, and which Israel, Hamas and most of the world broadly welcomed.
