KIMANIS: More than 1,000 runners gathered over the weekend to take part in the ‘Run for Hope’ charity event, held to raise funds for the rebuilding of St Anne Chapel in Penampang Baru.
Leading the crowd in a strong show of solidarity was Archbishop Datuk John Wong, who not only officiated the flag-off ceremony but also participated in the 7km Men's Open category.
The event, officially named the Nuhu Dolorosa de Kamijan Trail Run 2.0, featured three race categories: 7km, 12km and 30km. Participants included women, children, senior citizens, and clergy members, with 76-year-old Louis Ening Gabriel being the oldest runner to complete the course.
Also among the participants were nuns, novices (aspiring nuns), and priests, turning the run into a true community effort with a spiritual cause.
Organising chairman Jessel Kamijan said the second edition of the trail run was held in response to the growing congregation of St Anne Chapel, which has long outgrown its existing space.
“The chapel can no longer accommodate its congregation for Sunday Mass. That’s why we’ve come together, working closely with the local community, to organise this charity run,” he said.
The run was inspired by Monsignor Fr Nicholas Stephen, who played a key role in launching the fundraising initiative. Volunteers from neighbouring parishes collaborated with St Anne’s parishioners to stage the event.
In addition to the main races, the event grounds featured Rahmah goods on sale from two mobile trucks, various food and product stalls, and a pay-to-sing karaoke booth.
Lucky draw tickets and merchandise sales also contributed to fundraising efforts, with the grand prize being a motorcycle, alongside other top prizes including electrical appliances.
Among the seasoned runners were former Mount Kinabalu Climbathon champion Guanus Salagan and his wife Kona Liau.
