Sabah Launches New Cooperative Governance Programme with Strong Support from MEDC and SKM

KOTA KINABALU: The Ministry of Entrepreneurship Development and Cooperatives (MEDC), in collaboration with the Malaysian Cooperative Commission (SKM), launched a significant programme aimed at strengthening the governance of new cooperatives in Sabah. The event, held at Sabah Oriental Hotel, coincided with the Malaysian Cooperative Movement Gathering and was officiated by Deputy Minister Dato' Sri Ramanan Ramakrishnan.
The programme attracted nearly 60 cooperatives and over 200 leaders and members from across Sabah, serving as a vital platform to promote awareness of legal governance and foster stronger ties within the cooperative community. Organised by SKM, the event underscores the government’s commitment to empowering the cooperative sector as a pillar of the nation’s economy.
In his speech, Ramanan praised the Malaysian Cooperative Commission for orchestrating the initiative, emphasising that cooperatives form the backbone of the rakyat’s economy. He highlighted that the programme’s core goal is to promote noble values, cultivate a progressive cooperative culture, and strengthen relationships among stakeholders.
The Deputy Minister urged new cooperatives to leverage government initiatives and facilities designed to boost the entrepreneurial ecosystem. He also called on them to adopt strategic planning and meet all application requirements to unlock available incentives. Committed to inclusive growth, he assured that the government remains dedicated to fostering a vibrant and sustainable cooperative movement for a fairer economic future.
During the event, three Cooperatives were accorded their certificate of Accreditation. They were Koperasi SetiaKawan, Koperasi Usahawan Kecil Sabah and Koperasi Bamban Sipitang.
The event was also attended by Tuan Haji Efendee OP Andu, Deputy CEO (Operations and Regulatory) of SKM, Tuan Haji Awg. Ruslli bin Haji Mohammad, Director of SKM Sabah, along with leaders and members of cooperatives from throughout Sabah.
