KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Wildlife Department has taken enforcement action following reports of a Sun Bear being kept at a public attraction and the possession of bear parts in Lahad Datu.

The department received a complaint on 11 February regarding a Facebook video showing a Sun Bear at a public venue. Acting on the tip-off, officers conducted a raid on 12 February under the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997 (WCE 1997). The operation uncovered a Sun Bear cub being kept on the premises for public display. A man believed to be the owner or manager was detained to assist with investigations.

In a separate operation, authorities arrested another man at a food outlet in Lahad Datu for allegedly possessing three Sun Bear canines, which were being used as decorative items. The items were seized and the suspect is under further investigation.

The Sun Bear (Helarctos malayanus) is a totally protected species under Schedule 1 of the WCE 1997. Members of the public are not permitted to hunt, keep, possess, or display these animals.

Offenders face a fine of RM50,000 to RM250,000 and imprisonment of one to five years upon conviction.

The Sabah Wildlife Department emphasised that it will take no compromise on breaches of wildlife laws, and expressed appreciation to members of the public who report wildlife crimes. The department urged anyone encountering Schedule 1 species such as the Sun Bear to report immediately or surrender the animal for rescue and proper management.

This enforcement action underscores Sabah’s ongoing commitment to the protection of its wildlife and the strict penalties for those who flout conservation laws.
