SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Tourism Association (STAN) has urged Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) to step up efforts to improve operational standards and facilities at Sandakan Airport, stressing the importance of creating a strong first impression for arriving passengers and visitors.

STAN President Teo Chee Kim was responding to a recent statement by Malaysia Airports Managing Director Datuk Izani Ghani, who said that the organisation’s priority ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026 is to ensure smooth, reliable and welcoming arrivals, supported by efficient operations and upgraded facilities at both international and domestic airports nationwide.

“I fully concur with Datuk Izani that international and domestic airports must receive equal attention to ensure consistent service standards at all entry points,” Teo said. “We must therefore avoid a repeat of past operational shortcomings, such as leaking roofs and malfunctioning air-conditioning systems. First impressions matter, and as a key gateway to Borneo’s renowned wildlife attractions, Sandakan Airport must consistently meet expected service standards.”

Teo noted that the airport runway has already been extended and that plans are in place to upgrade the passenger terminal, including the addition of two aerobridges and the expansion of the arrival hall. He added that passenger traffic at Sandakan Airport has surpassed pre-pandemic levels, reaching a record 1.18 million passengers in 2025.

“To sustain this growth momentum, Sandakan needs greater direct flight connectivity,” he said. “Penang, Singapore, Hong Kong and Guangzhou are among the destinations that STAN has been actively advocating for in collaboration with various stakeholders over the past few years.”

He also called on Malaysia Airports to play a more proactive role in promoting and positioning Sandakan as a regional aviation gateway serving the east coast districts of Sabah.

“With increased direct connectivity, Sandakan will be better placed to drive tourism growth, stimulate the local economy and create employment opportunities for the community,” Teo said. “This represents a win-win outcome — benefiting tourism stakeholders, creating jobs for locals and increasing revenue for Malaysia Airports. STAN remains fully committed to supporting and collaborating on initiatives to introduce more direct flights to Sandakan.”
