Scouts Community Sports Revives Tradition, promote Unity in Sandakan

SANDAKAN: The Zone 1 Scouts Community Sports in Sandakan Division was held recently, bringing together young Scouts and the local community in a celebration of tradition, unity, and healthy living.

During the Opening Speech by Senator Datuk Anna Bell @ Suzieana Perian, she highlighted the importance of preserving cultural heritage through traditional games, while at the same time instilling teamwork, discipline, and leadership among Scouts.

The programme, organised by PPMCS Zone 1 Sandakan under the leadership of Ts Mohd Sofiee Ag Basrih, was praised as both timely and meaningful. It not only strengthens bonds of friendship but also reintroduces traditional games that carry valuable lessons in cooperation, courage, and unity.

Speaking at the event, she reminded participants that the aim of the sports was not merely to compete, but to learn life values.

“Every activity and challenge trains you to think creatively, act swiftly, and most importantly, to work together as a team. This is the essence of Scouting, leadership by example, loyalty, courage, and the willingness to serve,” she said.

She also underscored the relevance of such community programmes in today’s technology-driven era, where young people risk becoming overly dependent on gadgets and sedentary lifestyles.

“Events like these encourage our children to rediscover an active, healthy lifestyle while appreciating the priceless wealth of cultural heritage,” she added.

The ceremony further acknowledged the contributions of the organising committee, Scout leaders, teachers, parents, and participants whose dedication made the event possible.

Participants were urged to embrace the competition in the spirit of sportsmanship, respect, and discipline, with the reminder that the true reward lies not in winning or losing, but in the experience and values gained for the future.

With a call for Scouts to remain united and uphold the motto of “Be Prepared to Serve”, the Zone 1 Scouts Community Sports was officially declared open, marking another milestone in nurturing character, resilience, and unity among the younger generation.
