KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah has resigned from his post as Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, making him the first Umno member to back away from the Perikatan Nasional Cabinet.

In a statement today, he said the move was made after taking into account several of his party's decisions and stance.

"As a member of Umno who is loyal to his party, I step down as a minister to the Federal Government.

"My priority after this will be focused on my work as the Member of Parliament for Lenggong and help strengthen the party in facing the political situation that has become more challenging."

Umno president Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had also stated that all Umno MPs must withdraw their support for Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
