KOTA KINABALU: As Sabah welcomed the Year of the Fire Horse on 17 February 2026, local leaders and communities are reminded of a vital principle: before we gallop into rapid expansion, we must first ground ourselves. This year, the focus is on disciplined leadership, stability, and sustainable growth,  values deeply rooted in Sabah’s natural rhythm and cultural resilience, shares CEO of AEI Wellness Sdn Bhd & QiMag Wholistic Professionals PLT, Cleopatra Lajawai.

“The Fire Horse symbolises bold movement, visibility, and expansion. However, experts emphasise that unchecked fire can lead to burnout or destructive wildfires. Accordingly, 2026 is not a year for impulsive acceleration but for cultivating stabilised momentum. Leaders are urged to regulate their energy, harness their strength, and act with purpose,” she says.

According to her, Sabah’s natural landscape offers a poignant metaphor: early mornings illuminate Mount Kinabalu with gentle light, supporting circadian rhythms and promoting wellbeing. As the sun sets, the calming darkness signals the importance of rest and recovery, an echo of the year’s guiding philosophy: activation at dawn, recovery at dusk.

“Grounding in Sabah’s community and environment aligns with ten holistic wellness pillars, from soul purpose and mental regulation to environmental harmony. Each element emphasises balance: regulating emotional responses, building resilience, maintaining environmental sustainability, and fostering meaningful relationships.”

Public health research supports this approach, highlighting that overstimulation and stress undermine resilience and decision-making. The Fire Horse year advocates for a mindful balance of intensity and regulation, ensuring sustainable progress.

This grounding strategy resonates with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including good health, economic growth, climate action, and responsible consumption. It also aligns with the Inner Development Goals (IDGs), emphasising self-awareness, emotional regulation, and collaborative leadership.

Cleo says, “From Sabah to the world, this year’s message is clear: ground before you gallop. Strengthening our internal and external structures will enable us to move forward purposefully and sustainably.”

As she reflects, “I stabilise my energy, strengthen my soul and mind, and direct my fire wisely in 2026.” Moving ahead, the call is to act with discipline, resilience, and thoughtful intention, ensuring that our growth is rooted in stability and purpose.

“To our Muslim friends observing Ramadan, Selamat Bersungkai and a blessed month of reflection.”
