KOTA KINABALU: Sabah DAP secretary Chan Foong Hin has urged the Perikatan Nasional (PN) Government to not look for excuses and reconvene the Parliament instead as advised by His Majesty Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah and the Malay Rulers.

He said the advice by the King and the Malay Rulers for the reopening of Parliament and Legislature is a manifestation of support for democracy.

Many ministers and leaders from the PN Government have previously called for the extension of the State of Emergency for another six months after August 1.

"The King and the Malay rulers had heard the voice of the people. It also shows that the King as the head of the nation and ruler agreed that parliamentary democracy is the best way to resolve the political crisis, the economy and the health of Malaysia.

"This is a historic moment in Malaysia where a king and heads of state choose to state their stand and issue statements publicly," he said in a statement today.

"This is clearly a distrust of the PN Government administration, especially against Prime Minister Tan Sri Mahiaddin Yasin, and shows that the King and the Malay Rulers are disappointed with it for failing to handle the Covid-19 pandemic in Malaysia."

Chan also mentioned that although it is very rare, monarchs can also be the check and balance on ministers with administrative (executive) powers.

"Although Mahiaddin has unlimited power during the emergency to suspend Parliament, he still failed to control the spread of the Covid-19 and the situation has worsened.

"The standard operating procedures (SOPs) set by his government are chaotic; the number of patients is reaching ever-increasing levels, and his Cabinet ministers are without coordination.

"The King must have heard the complaints and grievances of the people and feel that He is responsible for correcting the situation of chaos before choosing to make a political statement in ensuring Malaysia back on track," he stated.

Chan who is also the Kota Kinabalu MP has called on Mahiaddin to uphold the advice of the Agong and the Malay Rulers to reconvene provide Parliament with immediate effect as a platform for discussing strategies against the pandemic.
